Of all the players available. WTF!! Breaston? And then let Waters go... are the chiefs not trying to improve? We have all these NEEDS and they pick up second rate players? What about the fans getting a good product.

Good point Dave. Zorn is a good coach and the Chiefs have Baldwin so it could go either way. Thanks for sharing your opinion.

The Chiefs were 30th in passing yards under Weiss. It would be hard to get any more one-dimensional than that. I think their passing numbers will actually improve this year. Not because of the coaching change, but because Cassel should still be getting better, and he'll have more weapons(Baldwin and a quality free agent to come) this year.

Comment on 5 Reasons Why Matt Cassel May Regress in 2011 by fishbowl72

You really have just 2 reasons listed, not five. Numbers 1,2,3 and 5 are all Charlie Weis. Charlie's play calling, blocking scheme, 30th in passing because of playcalling and the loss of Weis (in order of your reasons) ahould all be under Charlie Weis category for reasons Cassel MAY regress. My reply is simple to this: Weis never threw one pass, picked up a block on a corner blitz, or dropped a pass against the abysmal Ravens secondary.

Your assumptions are based on the current makeup of the team without an offensive coordinator that was only in KC for one year. I can only conclude that you believe the new OC is incompetent and will not realize we are a RUNNING team. And the Bowe thing bothers me. Moeaki was just a rookie and not really seasoned for the playoffs, so shutting down Bowe should have been a cinch. What other options did we have...Chambers? do you think there's any possibility the Chiefs may want to pick up another reciever (or two)?

#4 bugs me as well. Do you think Cassel is not a professional? Do you believe now he's locked up it's time to coast a la Chambers? I think a young team got a taste of the playoffs. A sweet flavor tainted by the bitter ending of getting embarassed at home. They will want more. That includes Cassel.

One reason Matt might take a step back is the offensive line. Waters and Wiegman are getting up there with no clear replacements. Although Cassel is fairly mobile the pass blocking must improve.

Another is that with a tandem such as Charles and Jones an OC would be tempted to follow the Martyball blueprint. How did Marty not win the Superbowl with that D AND Joe Montana (an old, tired Montana still beats Bono, Grbac and DeBerg on their best day). The answer is Martyball. Run early and often...only pass once it's too late to win the game. Remember when Matt caught fire this past season? A blowout to the Donkeys when McDillhole had the offensive script. Matt had to pass. This gave him the oppertunity to prove himself. Cassel is capable, if given the chance.

Other than those two reasons, the lockout would be the only thing to hold back Matt Cassel's progress as a QB and as a team leader.

I hate to point this out, but you do realize the Chiefs once again were in the playoffs solely because of their schedule? The only team that had a winning record of any team they beat was San Diego at 9-7 (the first game of the season, they lost to them later in the year). The next best was Jacksonville at 8-8. Oakland was 6-0 against the AFC West, beating the Chiefs twice. Wonder why the Chiefs lost in the first game of the playoffs? The NFL has to make the schedule fair, not make one team play a tougher schedule than another then try to compare the two teams against each other. How can you say the Chiefs were a better team than Oakland if they didn't both play the same teams? If the Chiefs were a better team, how did Oakland beat them twice? And based on the teams the Chiefs played, you can't say their secondary improved over last year considering the strength of schedule. I say the NFL needs to even the playing field, each team within a division plays the same teams, then lets see who wins the division.
